Embarking on a photography series, the focus shifts towards gestures, objects, composition, and light — excluding the audience and color from the narrative. I’ve discovered that limitations in testing with individuals can lead to a heightened focus on other factors that possess character and tell a story.

In the realm of public houses, these stories manifest in preferences for the romantic glow of a candle over artificial lighting, the arrangement of glasses on a table, a solitary glass standing alone, a partially filled plate, or an ice cube about to melt in a drink. Similar to Youkilis’s work, the main character doesn’t always have to take center stage; sometimes, still figures convey more than a flowing conversation.
